Chiredzi Smoky-Amethyst - with Hematite inclusions

Origin: Africa, Zimbabwe, Masvingo, Chiredzi

Chiredzi Amethyst is very unusual in many ways, normally occurring as single crystals or in small clusters with some growing on milky Quartz crystals. The Amethyst may be zonal and the crystals may have clear to smoky areas.

From this locality Scepters (and reverse scepters) are known. The crystals often has inclusions of Red Hematite specks and in only a few white cloudy Kaolinite (?) inclusions are found.

Amethyst is a coloured variety of Quartz, its colour can vary from light pinkish violet to a deep purple. These geodes are from ancient basaltic lavas that formed by water bubbles trapped in the lava, cooling and forming crystals.

The photos were taken in bright sunlight to bring out their best colours. The last two photos is with back-light.
